I use a solid colored background mat board (usually white or brown - depends on the card - I want contrast). If I have troubles getting a card or envelope to stand up, I have a few small pieces of folded card stock to stick behind them.

I did mine with a huge white cardboard as a background, so that the entire background will be white, and I can still position my card standing. I photograph my cards with flash, and edit it in photoshop after that.
