Picture backdrops - to use or not to use

First, of I love your image and I think it's a great use of props! And second, I couldn't agree more with Stephanie. I think that props need to add to the feel of your item, not take the attention ...

Displaying Greeting Cards for Etsy Photographs

Oouuu, fun question! I use a tan linen fabric swatch for all of my pictures. It adds a bit of texture and is not too dark, but still lets the white of my cards stand out. I occassionally use a larg...

About Me:
I'm a twenty something writer with a BA in Anthropology who started a handprinted social stationery and custom invitation company called Birdcage Cards. I have a deep love of paper and the words that it can hold. I'm a little obsessed with science fiction, roasted marshmallows, my niece and nephew, and my adorable chow-mixed dog Max (I know its a generic name he came with it okay, he's a rescue dog). I love people, cultures and all the little things that we've come up with to entertain ourselves while we're here.

Oh, Max is a cutie - patootie! I think one of the best feelings in the world is when a dog lays down next to you ... it's even better when I'm being crafty and he keeps me company that way :)

He's actually a miniature schnauzer, but his coloring and stockiness make him look very similar to a scottie. I'll pass along your compliments to him and I can't wait to see Max :)

Oh, that's so funny about PJ! He was probably just happy it didn't become PB&J!

We would have loved to get a rescue dog, but we were worried about my husband's allergies. Our breeder's name for her company is Blackwitch Farms. It made me think of my favorite children's book when I was growing up called The Old Black Witch. It was about this small little witch that was really grumpy (but ended up being nice, of course) who made wonderful blueberry pancakes. So there is the really long story behind our little dog's name.

You'll have to post a photo of Max sometime!

I just missed the last part of your question - sorry! I got hung up on this too...use the code for the Flash site when you create your Etsy Mini and then just paste into a text box on your page.

Thanks Kate! On photo styling tips...I found out that natural light was best for my cards rather than using a light tent as the base was often white or a light color, and using props put the product in a better context. I did have a bit of success using large sheets of art paper in different colors but it became boring after awhile. So to answer the question on props...I found this desk blotter at Pottery Barn online recently and it was on sale around $15! Also, I got the pin board from there as well and the neato pushpin clips for holding the card I found at my local Borders. The placemats came from west elm...and they were also cheap, around $5 a piece or less. Hope that helps as I struggled for a long time to find the right formula for my setting and equipment (borrowing an SLR from a friend). As a last note, what is cool about using the desk blotter is the corner that holds the paper pad is good for keeping the corner of the card down while you take a snapshot...

It's All About The Process

I love when writers and artists share their process. Afterall, what's that phrase? It's not where you end up but how you got there that matters. Its the journey, the discovery - that's the fun part. So, when I came across the preliminary sketches of, children's book author and illustrator, Madi's new book I'm A Little Bit Scared Of... you can imagine… Continue

Anyone having any luck on Facebook?

I'm a huge fan of Twitter. Actually, I love being there. I think its safe to say that I've gotten it down pat. I also find significantly more interaction from the Twitter community versus Facebook - well not through my personal Facebook account, but through Birdcage Cards' page. On Twitter I find it easier to make friends, network and… Continue
